the abstraction layer can be done with a query -- or changed to a query if needed. This allows fieldnames in the BackEnd to change, then you can just change the query.
personally, I do not do this. I try to think of good names to begin with ;) I realize that many are at the mercy of others who change things all the time!

If you create forms and use VBA or macros, you are doing exactly that. Any
serious Access application will have the three layers to which you refer.
