Re: [MS_AccessPros] Re: Access + SQL Server Express

Bill

Thank You. But on the download page there are various downloads associated with express version. There are tools and database only versions. It is a little confusing.

click on the red download button to see the things that I see at http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/editions/2012-editions/express.aspx

Jim -
It kinda depends on which version of Access you have. SQL 2005 should work fine with Access 2003 or later. I haven't worked with 2008 but I'd guess it would be fine, too.

I think Access 2010 will work with SQL 2012 but don't hold me to that.

It really doesn't matter since they are all free. If you come up against something that won't work, drop down a version.

I have a feeling 2005 will end up being the workhorse for quite a while. It's a good, solid product and businesses are slow to go with the latest version of something so critical as their database engine.

Be sure to use the ZMicrosoft SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access utility (MSSMA) http://www.microsoft.com/Download/en/details.aspx?id=28763 if you are upsizing an existing Access DB. This tool is GREAT! much better than the one that comes with Access.

You just link to the tables using an ODBC connection (the last selection in the File Type list on the target database dialog for getting external data). Then you can run queries on them just like linked Access tables. There are a few gotchas that I've listed on my site. See http://thatlldoit.com/howtosarticles.aspx#sqlbackend

They also don't have a lot of money to spend. On my end, most of my experience is with Access, so I'm hoping to find something that won't have too much of a learning curve.
