RE: [MS_AccessPros] Re: Thanks to this Group I am now an Access MVP!

Pat,

Thanks for the hearty laugh this afternoon. It takes all kind to make this
world go-round. My proudest achievement and my fulltime job is that I am
father to a 16 year old young man who has never given me or his mother a
moment's worth of trouble.no exaggeration. I also devout full-time to a 27
year marriage, and in my spare time, I do a little writing: blogging, speech
writing, writing for hire, and on top of all of that I have managed to
publish two books. I do get paid for my writing, and although I do not get
paid for the programming (mostly bartering), Access programming is the most
relaxing thing that I can do. I have a friend who owns a yacht, and he
swears that riding on the river in his boat is more relaxing than spending
an hour talking to a Psychiatrist. When he explains why, he makes a good
argument, but I'll take 4 hours behind my PC working on an Access project

Over spending the day on the Potomac River with him.

I picked up database development (and I use the word "development' very
loosely here) during the old dBase days. Back around 1999, my first dBase
app was a Personnel tracking system that automated the personnel department
of the company that I worked for. I recall the module that took care of the
affirmative action requirements: it used to take me about 2 weeks to prepare
our annual DOL reports before I created the dBase app. After completing the
app, all I needed to do was obtain 5 figures regarding employment statistics
from the District of Columbia government and enter them into my database,
and after hitting print, all of the reports were printed in about 2 minutes.
I stunned my employer, and he gave me a very nice bonus the following year.
In fact, we used an affirmative action lawyer who told me that he had
clients who were paying as much as $80,000 to get their affirmative action
requirements automated. Now you can buy those programs off the shelf for a
few hundred dollars, but it was a pretty big deal 22 years ago.

Here's to hoping that you parlay your new status into something even more
meaningful.

Kind regards,

David

Hi David,

I wanted to share a little bit more with you. Many of us began a career
developing Access in just such a manner as you and I. A.D. Tejpal was an
engineer and after retiring from a career working for the Railroad began
tinkering with Access and now he is an Access MVP, a moderator of this
Group, and has about 160 sample databases he has provided for us in Rogers
Access Library.

But I should warn you it is dangerous to keep developing Access Databases
because you can get "Access Fever" which is often diagnosed when the patient
begins speaking in SQL or VBA. For example:

Making an order at McDonalds: "Select All from Menu Where MenuItem = 2 and
Beverage = 'Sprite'".

I have seen a documented example of a the patient talking to the children
during the meal something like this:

On Error GoTo TimeOut

If Not Vegetables.Eaten Then
Desert.Denied
Else
Desert.Granted
End If

TimeOut:
MsgBox "Go Sit in Chair For 15 Minutes.", vbCritical

Kind Regards,
Pat
