But it's not absolutely necessary to split because all copies of the application
are runnng on the same machine. It's like opening mutliple Access sessions one
one machine. It probably is a good idea anyway to split because of all the
"silent" saves Access does to open forms that the user filters.

The same thing happens when the DB is split. There is still only one locking
file. First one to save wins. The next one to save gets a choice to keep or
discard the changes.
Splitting is done not to isolate data changes but to prevent corruption of the
forms, reports and system tables.
