Re: [AccessDevelopers] Re: Access Restriction

Mark,
I am curious on how the folder and subfolders backfired on you. It is working great for me. Only the people who have access to the subfolder can see that specific database with that specific data I send for that specific department. Maybe I missed something in my application that makes it not secure.

Jim,

I understand what you mean. I am dealing with payroll information and trying to make sure that each department can only see the information for there department. I am daily uploading Krono's data and other mainframe data into my database. I then add to that wage data, daily status data, and other data from different sources.
I set up the excel files with queries to the database to give them specfic information based on the what the file is setup to access. While this does work unless I let them have access to the database where the information is stored the links won't work. We put the database in a restricted folder and gave the users access to sub folders, but that too back fired.
My current work around is that I have 40 files that are in the secured folder that I run a macro in to refresh all the data. I then make backups which are saved/renamed with the date modified then doing a paste special values on them to get rid of any links. The files are then sent to their respective folders as static files. This gives them the daily information but I was looking to make it more robust by allowing the users to select different Pay Periods in the spreadsheets which would allow the users to view previous Periods data.

I appreciate the suggestions,

Mark

I also have a process that in a main database creates tables using queries to create about 12 tables with department information including id's and names and other information. I then send the tables to the respective department databases. I do it this way because of the serious and sometimes crazy fear from management of anyone seeing specific information. We have linked tables but not very many because of this management fear.
