Here are the main things to remember :
1. balance brackets and parentheses
2. make sure commas are in the right place
3. delimit & with space
ie: instead of this:
a&b
do this:
a & b
I use NotePad to paste an equation into and break lines at open parentheses ( to find places where parentheses aren't balanced. I do the same thing for commas sometimes too
Access 2010 has better Intellisense and a more robust Expression Builder*. It is easier to write equations and see where things aren't balanced.
* press Ctrl-F2 to invoke the Expression Builder.
