RE: [MS_AccessPros] Multi-user front end system - shared vs. local

Heidi-

There is no additional risk that the back end will get corrupted, but the risk
that the front end goes south is exponentially greater. Even if users aren't
creating any objects, Access attempts to make "silent" changes behind the
scenes. For example, it will attempt to save a form if the user applies a
filter. You'll be much better off with individual front ends on each machine.

Subject: [MS_AccessPros] Multi-user front end system - shared vs. local

I have a split database system, currently the back end system is on a shared
drive, and the front end is in a different folder accessed by a number of users
at a given time, although I don't generally see more than a few users in there
at a time (<10).

I plan to set up the front end system so that users can report information into
a form, and that supervisors can also go in and review what has been entered.

From what I have read online, the standard and recomended approach is to have
the front-end system be a local file on everyone's computer (the table links are
set up to allow this). However, I have also seen comments to the effect that a
shared front end system might do just fine if 1)users are only entering
infromation, not creating forms or making changes, etc; 2) there aren't going to
be a huge number of users; and 3)everyone will continue to have the same version
of Access (2003). All of these are true in my situation.

What I am wondering is
-Do I have to distribute front-end systems to everyone?
-What are the risks if I just use a shared front-end system? I'm mainly
concerned with data loss or corruption.

Thanks!
Heidi
